AS/400 OPERATIONS NAVIGATOR INFORMATION WIN95/NT V3R1M2

** Last updated 4/3/97 **

1.0 General Information:
================================================================
1.1 What Objects Are Supported
-------------------------------
The AS/400 Operations Navigator provides easy access to highly
used AS/400 objects for those AS/400 systems defined via the
AS/400 Connections window of Client Access. The following
objects can be accessed from OS/400 with V3R1, V3R2, V3R6
and V3R7:
 o Jobs
 o Messages
 o Printers
 o Printer Output

In addition to the above, objects can be accessed from AS/400
systems that have OS/400 V3R7 with enhancements delivered in
cumulative package C7029370.
 o Database
 o File Systems
 o System
   - Authorization lists
   - Hardware Inventory
   - Software Inventory
   - System policies
     -- Backup
     -- Security policies
     -- Auditing policies
 o Users and Groups

1.2 Accessing AS/400 Operations Navigator
------------------------------------------
The AS/400 Operations Navigator function can be accessed in
any of the following ways:
o By double clicking on the Operations Navigator icon on the
   Client Access folder
o By double clicking on the AS/400 Network icon on the
Windows 95 or Windows NT desktop, then double clicking on
   the desired AS/400 system
o By selecting the AS/400 Operations Navigator action on the
context menu for any AS/400 system displayed on the
AS/400 Connections dialog of Client Access (you can simply
double click on the system if Operations Navigator has been
defined as the default action for that system)
o By clicking on the AS/400 Network icon that appears in the
Windows 95 or Windows NT Explorer, then double clicking on
   the desired AS/400 system
o By invoking the cwbunnav.exe application that resides in the
   Client Access directory

1.3 Hardware and Software Requirements
---------------------------------------
Hardware:
 o Using Windows 95:
   - Processor: 80486 minimum, Pentium recommended
   - Memory: 12 Mb minimum, 16 Mb recommended
 o Using Windows NT:
   - Processor: Pentium 100 MHz or faster
   - Memory: 24 Mb minimum, 32 Mb recommended
 o Disk Space:
   - 10 Mb minimum

Software:
o Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 95
 o Client Access/400 for Windows 95/NT V3R1M2
o Service Pack 1 (SF37523, Product 5763XD1) or later for
   Client Access/400 for Windows 95/NT
o For the enhanced function (users, database, etc) OS/400
V3R7 with cumulative package C7029370 or later.

1.4 Miscellaneous
------------------
Once the AS/400 Network icon at the top of the tree view of the
Operations Navigator window has been opened, any changes made
on the AS/400 Connections dialog (i.e. adding or removing
systems), will not show up in the Navigator window until the
Navigator window is manually refreshed by the user.

When the first menu item in the File menu is a cascading
submenu, the submenu is displayed on top of the main menu
instead of off to one side. When the mouse is moved off one of
the cascade items the main menu no longer responds to mouse
input. This is a Microsoft bug. Users can correct the problem
by clicking on the word "File" on the main menu bar to clear the
menu. The next time the menu is accessed it should function
normally.

2.0 Required PTFs:
================================================================
2.1. Host Server PTFs for Displaying National Characters
--------------------------------------------------------
SF37093 Product 5763SS1 (V3R1)
SF37331 Product 5763SS1 (V3R2)
SF37262 Product 5716SS1 (V3R6)
SF37302 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)

These PTFs contain fixes so that national characters contained
in data coming from the AS/400 (e.g., messages, job logs, text
descriptions on objects) are displayed correctly on the
Operations Navigator interfaces.
In addition, ensure that the user profile that you are using has
CCSID, country Id, and language Id that matches your client
NLV.

2.2. Problem with quoted library names in QSYS
-----------------------------------------------
SF34960 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)

2.3. Problem with backup policy dates on backup policies list
--------------------------------------------------------------
SF36881 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)
Needed in order to be able to see the last date and time
backups were run when viewing the backup policies list.

2.4. Problem with quotes for permissions
-----------------------------------------
SF38421 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)
Needed in order to handle path names with imbedded quotes for
permissions.

2.5. Host Server PTFs for Database
-----------------------------------
SF36055 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)
SF37232 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)

3.0 Specific Information for Navigator Functional Areas:
================================================================
3.1 Database:
--------------
Host Server PTFs required:
  SF36055 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)
  SF37232 Product 5716SS1 (V3R7)

Potential Functional Problems:
 a) The Create View and the Table Properties sheet both
require a screen size of 800x600 to be used effectively.
 b) Creating tables and views with names that contain
special characters such as blanks, apostrophes, and
backslashes may lead to problems trying to use these
tables and views in other operations, eg. trying to
specify the permissions to these tables or views.
Specifically, you should avoid using blanks or
apostrophes if the names are less than 10 characters
long, and you should avoid using backslashes if the
names are greater than 10 characters long. We
encourage you to use descriptive names, but to avoid
using blanks, apostrophes, backslashes quotes, or other
    "special characters".
 c) When creating a new table with an index, you will not be
able to create the index with a descending key.

If you experience hangs or other problems when attempting to
open the Database folder, it may be that the AS/400 Database
Server has not been started. To start the Database Server,
use Graphical Access to open a session to the AS/400, and
issue the following command: STRHOSTSVR *DATABASE.

3.2 File Systems:
------------------
If invariant characters, national characters, or quoted names
are used for the object name, the user cannot open the file or
get permissions. This is a known problem that is being
investigated.

Users cannot get permissions at all on some languages (DBCS and
German). There is a problem when back slashes are in the data.
A fix for this problem will be in Service Pack 1 (SF37523) of
Client Access for Windows 95/NT.

On the AS/400, you can name objects that contains quotes.
Microsoft doesn't allow file names or directories to have
quotes. You will get an error if you try to expand a quoted
name on the Navigator interface. Microsoft has no plans to
fix this.

In the filter dialog, quoted name searching is not supported.
This is a Microsoft restriction.

If you ask permissions on any object that is quoted, you'll get
back the error CPFA0A9 from the AS/400, "Object not found".
There is a PTF that will fix this problem (see Required PTF
list above, SF38421).

The QOpenSys file system in IFS is case sensitive. Windows 95
does not support case sensitive file systems. So when the user
is displaying the file system and opens QOpenSys, and they try
to double click on UserData or ProdData, a message is issued,
"An error occurred while retrieving files and directories".
This cannot be fixed. This is not a problem on Windows NT.

3.3 Printer Output (AFP Viewer):
---------------------------------
If you are using a 640x480 display, and select to Open a piece
of printer output (view its contents), the AFP Viewer window
may initially be too large. It may appear as if the horizontal
scrollbar isn't there, however, the window just needs to be
resized.

If you use the AFP Viewer (Open) to view a piece of printer
output and notice that the last few lines are not being shown,
do the following from the AFP Viewer window:
o Select the View menu item
 o Select Paper Size
o Click the Autosize check box then press OK

If you use the AFP Viewer (Open) to view a piece of printer
output and notice that the text from line to line doesn't line
up as expected, do the following from the AFP Viewer window:
o Select the Options menu item
 o Select Text Fidelity
o Select Word, or Character, and see if that corrects the
   problem.
The default text fidelity of Line will not give you as precise
of output as Word or Character, but the display performance is
better. Selecting Word or Character will degrade display
performance.

3.4 Users and Groups:
----------------------
When opening the Properties on an existing user profile, if
error CPF9A8C error occurs from the QOKSCHD API (reason code
11), it means that the Lotus Notes option of OS/400 is partially
installed, improperly installed, or that the user does not
have an FSIOP. This is fixed in Service Pack 1 (SF37523), where
the error will not be externalized.

Groups created by AS/400 Operations Navigator have their passwor
set to the default, which is the group name. This is a potentia
security exposure. Circumvention: Change the password manually
for each group using the WRKUSRPRF command on the AS/400.
This problem will be fixed in Service Pack 2 for Client Access
for Windows 95/NT.
